BRC – British Retail Consortium

BRC stands for British Retail Consortium. This is a trade association for major UK supermarkets such as Tesco, Safeway, Somerfield, and Sainsbury. This trade association developed the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety in 1998. The idea behind it is that a supplier with a certificate meets the requirements of different customers, thus limiting the flow of auditors. Currently, BRC8 is the latest version available. You can download the BRC8 Food self-assessment on the BRC website.

IFS: International Featured Standards

IFS Food stands for International Featured Standards Food and bears a strong resemblance to BRC Food. The first variant of IFS Food is also based on the then current variant of BRC Food. However, there are some differences. IFS Food works with so-called ‘knock-out criteria’. If one of these criteria is not met, the supplier is automatically not approved for IFS Food.
